What Equipment Is Needed to Exclude a Pigeon?
Pigeons can be a nuisance in residential and commercial areas both. Usually, birds are not considered serious pests like mice, insects, and snakes, etc., because they carry fewer health risks. But a large pigeon population can be irritating, because of their noise and the droppings. Pigeon droppings are acidic and can destroy metallic structures and limestone. Pigeon droppings also ruin gardens. While clearing pigeon mess, remember to use gloves and sanitize the area thoroughly, or you run the risk of getting infected.
Equipment for excluding pigeons:
Excluding any kind, if bird from your garden will be a task, and pigeons are no different. You will have to eliminate every possible seating area for pigeons, by installing wires and netting, etc. Also, if pigeons are entering your garden because they find food there, then get rid of that first! Don't leave out bird food or crumbs, get rid of your birdbath, and if your garden is overrun with insects, due to whatever reason, fix that first.
Possible places where pigeons may sit and nest, are rooftop, terrace, gutter pipes, trees, wall, window ledges, ACs, etc. We will discuss how you can use equipment to make it difficult for pigeons to sit on all of these places.
- Gutter pipes: gutter pipes are spikes that are installed on open gutters that make it impossible for a bird to sit there and therefore nest. You can also close off the top of the pipe and make it a closed pipe to stop them nesting.
- Bird spikes: Bird spikes are usually made if stainless steel. They are not sharp, and their purpose is not to kill birds. They are simply long enough to make to impossible for a bird to sit there. They can be installed on walls and ledges.
- Bird coils: these look like the name. Coils of wire like a slinky, about 4-6 inch wide are placed on walls, to stop birds from sitting down. When birds sit, the wire bends inwards, scaring the bird.
- Bird netting: bird netting can be made of plastic, rope or metal, and can be used to enclose an area, or partly enclose it. The net will stop pigeons from entering. For a smaller bird, a net with smaller holes must be used.
- Bird repelling gels: These are sticky gels that are spread across the roof. The pigeons will find it sticky and will not land on it again, due to difficulty walking. But using these gels is not a good choice, as little animals and insects may get caught in it and die. Not to mention the huge mess it creates.
- Exclusion funnels and traps: If the pigeon population in your area has increased too much, you can capture the birds and release them far away, to counteract your problem.
